Privacy policy
The short version
- No account, no ads, no tracking or analytics tools.
- We use your IP address once, on our own server, to guess your city. We don't store it or send it to anyone.
- Searches are stored without anything that identifies you, to keep prices fresh and to show examples.
- One optional cookie remembers your currency. That's it.
- We never sell or share your data for marketing.
Who we are
Gapfare (gapfare.com) is run by [COMPANY NAME], [ADDRESS], which is responsible for your personal data ("controller" under the GDPR, "personal information controller" under the Philippine Data Privacy Act of 2012). Contact us about privacy at [PRIVACY EMAIL].
What we process, and why
Your IP address: to start from your city
When you open Gapfare, we look up your IP address in a location database (DB-IP City Lite) that runs on our own server. It gives an approximate city and country, which we use to pre-fill the airport you fly from, choose your currency, and show deals and examples from your country.
The address is used for that lookup and then discarded. We don't store it in our database or logs, link it to your searches, or send it to any other company. The guess is approximate and can be wrong (for example on a VPN); you can always change the airport and currency.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in showing you relevant results (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f); Data Privacy Act Sec. 12(f)).
Your searches: to find and check prices
To answer a search we store the route, dates, number and type of travellers, cabin class and bags you chose, together with the prices we found. We use this to:
- reuse recent prices for 30 minutes (live prices) to 6 hours (cached prices), so we don't ask airlines again for every visitor;
- check our accuracy: when you open a flight on the airline's site we compare the price we showed with the live price, and keep that comparison;
- show real examples on the home page, such as "To Kalibo instead of Caticlan, 161 kr less", for up to 14 days.
None of this is stored with your IP address, a cookie, an account or anything else that identifies you.
Trips you share
When you press "Share this trip" we save the flights you picked and the number of travellers under a random link (for example gapfare.com/t/k3x9Qa). Anyone with the link can see that trip. It contains no names or contact details. We keep shared trips for [RETENTION, e.g. 12 months]; ask us if you want one removed sooner.
Price alerts
If you set a price alert, we store your email address and the trip and target price, only to email you when the price drops. Every email has a link to stop the alert, and we delete your address when you stop your last alert. Legal basis: your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a); Data Privacy Act Sec. 12(a)), which you can withdraw at any time.
Cookies and browser storage
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
gapfare_currency | Remembers the currency you picked in the header. Only set when you pick one. | 1 year |
We use no other cookies and no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, so there is nothing to consent to.
Services your browser contacts
To display the site, your browser currently loads a few files directly from other companies, which therefore see your IP address and browser details:
- Google Fonts (Google) and Fontshare (Indian Type Foundry): fonts;
- unpkg, jsDelivr and Tailwind CSS: icons, weather icons and page styling;
- Wikimedia Commons: destination photos.
We plan to serve all of these from our own server, after which this section will be removed.
Services our server contacts
To find prices and information, our server sends route and date questions only, never your IP address or anything about you, to: Google Flights, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Aviasales / Travelpayouts, Open-Meteo (weather), Wikipedia (photos) and Frankfurter (European Central Bank exchange rates).
When you go to the airline's site
Booking happens on the airline's or agent's own website, under their privacy policy, not ours. Some links (for example to Aviasales) may contain a partner code so we can earn a commission; such a code doesn't identify you.
Where your data is kept
Our server is located in [SERVER COUNTRY]. If that is outside the EU/EEA and you are in the EU/EEA, we rely on [an adequacy decision / the EU Standard Contractual Clauses].
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, limit or object to how we use it, or give you a copy. Under the Philippine Data Privacy Act you also have the right to be informed, to object, to erasure or blocking, and to damages. Because we don't link searches to you, we usually hold nothing that identifies you, but if you have shared a trip or set an alert, we can find and remove it.
Write to [PRIVACY EMAIL]. We reply within 30 days. You can also complain to your data protection authority, for example the Norwegian Datatilsynet, your EU country's authority, or the Philippine National Privacy Commission.
Children
Gapfare isn't aimed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Bigger changes, such as accounts or booking on Gapfare, will be explained here before they start.
